CONTROL ARMS

We all know what suspension is for a vehicle, but many are unaware when it comes to how that suspension works. That's where the control arm comes in. This particular car part is what connects the vehicles suspension to the vehicle's chassis. This allows the suspension to operate properly while allowing the vehicle to remain somewhat rigid. Without control arms, a vehicle would be unable to properly use its suspension, and each drive would be incredibly rough. Handling would also be very difficult, not to mention dangerous. Thankfully, this simple piece of metal is in place to hold it all together at your wheels.

Control arms are typically a wishbone shaped piece of metal that attaches in two places to your chassis, and in one place to your vehicles suspension. There can be upper and lower variants, but in most cases the positioning is under the suspension, while the top of the suspension connects to the strut mount. All control arms are not created equal, and some vehicles will have larger or smaller, lighter or heavier, or varying designs depending on application. For example, the beefier set up of a rugged rock crawler might not function properly on a carbon fiber bodied track racer.

As the main pivot point in your suspension, your the arms are crucial. They transmit some of the road feel to your steering wheel. So when it starts to fail, it's no surprise that you can feel the sensation as you drive. Bumpy rides and otherwise poor handling can indicate that your control arms have begun to fail.

A failing arm can be loud, as it affects your suspension directly. A ride that is louder when going over bumps or when cornering can be an indication of problems. Another sign you might be in for trouble is if you notice you can place your hand on a wheel, and it moves. The wheel should be planted firmly in place.

In most set ups, you'll also find the vehicles ball joints connected to the arm. These two systems work together to allow the wheel assembly to flex when going over bumps and to come in better contact with the road. This keeps the wheels planted and improves handling as well as efficiency. For such a small part, the impact it has it quite noticeable.

Like other suspension components, a failed arm will affect your tire wear. Noticing uneven tire wear but experiencing an otherwise smooth ride can indicate that there is an issue with your control arms. When these symptoms occur, be sure to save on your control arm replacements.
